Looooooong overdue haf of an art trade with

Amasteria for
:iconoc-training: OC-training

I tried to emulate her style so I could give her simular quality work since my style is so simple and cartoonish but it was a lost cause - I actually abandoned the unfinished version of this, tried doing it traditionally gave up and came back here to complete it

all in all this was a huge learning experience for me, Ive never worked with someone with black skin before, it was complicated not to have it be just a shapeless mass.

his wish was to hav etime and privacy to himself in nature

Its good to try things out of you comfort zone, especially in art. How else would artists improve otherwise? Overall, great job on the piece, considering the style is different from what you're used to. One quip I can see is the shading of the skin. The base skin color is too dark to see any shading done. So when applying a darker color base for skin, make it lighter then what is shown so shading will show up. It'll bring the same affect and keep the skin tone the same, but shading is actually visible.

Overall though, you did a great job on this piece :)

Alright so let me start by saying that I like this piece, it is unique and very natural, but i do have some quips i have with it. Let us start with the good first! Since i am an active user in digital art i must say that the coloring in spot on, everything is lively and has it's own determined place and detail. If it is a tree it is in the background, if it is the grass it looks like they really are standing in grass, just the placement and detail into the background was amazing here! The fireflies you did are very special, even though they are simple they still add an element of flare to the work, simple, but gets the job done. I have to point out that i love the grass in this piece, if i am ever that good at doing grass i need to learn some tips from what you did here, because that is probably the most realistic part of the picture, and that isn't a bad thing! Just because i like a certain thing about the photo does not mean that it is bad. Alright now on the person in the picture! The things i like, the dress or outfit is very well designed and adds flare to the picture, the browns sash you put on just makes that part even better! Now on to what i can say are the faults, and trust me i have done the same exact same in a recent piece of mine.

Never use black in a shading piece.

You never want to do this. Take a look at this for a moment.
Xeta the Lucario (My OC) (Updated) by XetaJTS

This was a design i did recently. My shading worked in the areas i wanted it to and i had everything i could want. But since i made the clothing black there was no way to shade it or even let people know what it was on him.

That is the problem in your piece. Since the skin tone is black there is no way for you to put depth on the body, the only places you can put it on is the clothing. Also it might just be me but the hair looks out of place, for it to match the look i would go for a more blurred look to the hair and then use a dark color to make bangs, but that is just my advice.

Overall it is a good piece but it might be better to go for a lighter color than black in a piece like this, dark grey pretty much works exactly the same so i would give that a go.

thanks for the comment~ Sorry it took so long to reply.

thanks for the complements - the character design and outfit both  go to Amasteria it is her oc :3
I always hear not to shade with black but I'm not sure why and the fer times I've tried using another color I'm not happy with how it looks

thanks for showing me your picture and yea I get what your saying about black - it was super hard. Thank you for the tips!

This work is nicely done, although, it could be made better :

- to make the shading look more natural, its a good idea to always consider the light source. eg. on her coat, there are fireflies nearby, however, the highlight is only on one side , as with the shading. Obviously, with lots of light sources like in this picture, it becomes quite complicated to shade, so it's always a good idea to look at a reference.

- for the skin (since it's black), i'd advise shading in navy or purple tones - which i can see you started doing - . and continue it throughout the piece, eg. using a pine green for the dress rather than a grass green. So that the colours look more well put together.

But overall a good piece that shows promise, so keep up the good work :)

It's always good to see an artist push themselves out of their comfort zone and I think you did a great job here. My own art often features characters with black skin so I can definitely appreciate how hard it is to shade something that's supposed to be black (the trick is to start with the darkest parts and progressively get lighter rather than the other way around), having said that you did a very good job in that respect. Also great job on the background, it has a nice mystical feel to it which compliments the character and has just the right amount of detail without detracting from the main focus. It also gives a good sense of depth, I like how you made the glows from the further away fireflies more transparent to help give that sense of depth. Good work! :)

Well I like it, even if it is a simpler style. Your coloring makes him feel solid to my eyes, and well defined from the background.

I going to assume it is a language barrier and not  you trying to start an argument were one is not necessary or you genuinely misunderstood me. I am not happy you would just assume I was insulting some one like that. I was saying MY style is simplistic and cartoons, not hers and I was trying to make something up to par with hers. I don't see how you can look at both of our art and get anything less from it. No matter what the reason for the miscommunication on whose art I was speaking of was I certainly do not appreciate you assuming I did not like the art. No matter who's art I was speaking of nothing I said gives any indicator I disliked it.
